THREE INTERESTING NATIVITY SCENES.
By 15th. century artist Fran Angelico, the above scene is a wall fresco at the Convento Di San Marco, Florence.
A 14th. century scene by Florence artist Giotto.
The above Nativity scene is 17th. century by Dutch artist Rembrandt.
The Penitent Mary Magdalene.
Painted by Titian in 1565 is done in oil on canvas, measuring 118 x 97 cms. It is on display at the Hermitage, St. Petersburg. The painting depicts Mary in the wilderness where she has gone to escape civilisation and her immoral past.Titian has captured the image of a troubled soul as she stares towards Heaven seeking God's forgiveness. The prayer book resting on a skull is a contrast between a perverse past and a redeeming future. By her side is the pot containing ointment which she used to anoint the feet of Christ just before the Last Supper.
LOCAL ART DEPICTING THE JARROW SITE. St. Paul's church and monastic site at Jarrow has been a chosen subject of artists and photographers alike for many years. Illustrated examples included on this page are those of early 18th. century sketches and engravings by such famous artists as Thomas Bewick, to 20th. century artists like L.S.Lowry.
In more recent times the church and monastic site has continued to be a favourite subject mainly for local artists, some of whose works of art are illustrated below. ( please scroll down).
NORMAN TOWER.

The print above dated 1845 is of the Norman tower and was taken from an old church guide book. Notice the wooden chancel door which is now blocked up and the sundial on the right hand buttress of the tower.

Lowry was a regular visitor to Tyneside and used to stay at the Marriott Hotel in Seaburn. He visited Jarrow quite often on his visits and did this drawing of St. Paul's in 1964.

The above print is by the famous 18th. century wood engraver Thomas Bewick, from Mickley in Northumberland. The engraving of St. Paul's was done in 1785.

OIL PAINTING BY JOSEPH Mc.INTYRE
This painting at high tide makes the monastery seem almost surrounded by water. In the Slake recess in the distance to the left of the painting can be seen the four main chimneys of Jarrow Alkali Works.
The painting which is oil on canvas is by the Victorian Scottish artist Joseph Mc.Intyre, and dated at 1850.

CHANCEL DRAWING DATED 1891
The above drawing of St.Paul's chancel is dated at 1891, but is unsigned. The attention to detail can be appreciated when it is compared to the early 20th. century photograph taken from a similar location.

THE ANGELS EXHIBITION ~ took place inside St.Paul's church from 18th. May until 28th. September 2008. It featured the work of artist Celia Kilner from Holmfirth in North Yorkshire. The exhibition contained fifty angel scenes from around the world. Pictured below are e few of the exhibits.
