The Jarrow Choral Society
The Jarrow Choral Society.
The Jarrow Choral Society was founded in 1980 after the B.B.C contacted the Vicar of St.Paul's Church with a view to broadcasting their T.V. programme "Songs of Praise" from the Church. To make this a town event, choirs from all denominations were invited to take part. The Musical Director was Alan Watson and the Organist was Syd Harrison, Organist at St.Paul's.
The broadcast was such a success that it was decided to keep the choirs together and form a town Choir which came to be known as Jarrow Choral Society.
Syd and present musical director, Fred Hemmer, who is also an Organist at St. Paul's were two of the founder members of the Society.
The Society recently celebrated its 25th.Anniversary with a Concert in St.Matthew's Church featuring music by Haydn- the Te Deum, the Imperial (Nelson) Mass and the Clock Symphony from the Orchestra. Rehearsals are held every Thursday evening at Park Methodist Church hall, Jarrow, and at present the Society has 35 members (approx 50/50 male/female)
The society chairman is Norman Scott and Freda Carney is the Accompanist and Deputy Musical Director. New members are always welcome and at the present time we could use a few more tenors.

FRED CARNEY It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of our loyal member Fred Carney. Fred had been associated with our choral society for many years, and was also a keen member of a barbour shop singing group.
He leaves two Daughters, Freda and Joan.
